È morto a Roma l'attore Franco Citti, 80 anni. Malato da tempo, si è spento nella sua abitazione. A dare la notizia è stato l'amico Ninetto Davoli. Scoperto da Pasolini che lo volle protagonista di Accattone nel 1961, Citti da allora diventò un volto simbolo del suo cinema, recitando anche in Mamma Roma, Porcile e Il Decameron. Nella sua lunga carriera, Citti, nato in borgata, è stato diretto anche dal fratello Sergio e ha recitato in teatro con Carmelo Bene.
Citti, der aus einfachen Verhältnissen stammte, lernte in den 1950er-Jahren durch seinen Bruder Sergio den Schriftsteller und späteren Regisseur Pier Paolo Pasolini kennen. Dieser gab ihm als Laiendarsteller die Hauptrolle in seinem ersten Film Accattone (1961). Auch später griff Pasolini immer wieder auf ihn zurück, so übernahm Citti auch die Hauptrolle in Edipo Re (1967) und war in zahlreichen Nebenrollen in weiteren Filmen Pasolinis zu sehen. Citti war neben Ninetto Davoli einer seiner bevorzugten Schauspieler.
Mehrfach spielte Citti auch in Filmen seines Bruders Sergio und führte mit diesem gemeinsam Regie bei Cartoni animati (1997).
Citti spielte in über 60 Filmen, darunter auch in Der Pate. Seit den 1980er-Jahren war er verstärkt für das Fernsehen und auf der Bühne tätig. Kritiker beschrieben oftmals die "intensive physische und aussergewöhnlich expressive" Gestaltung seiner Rollen.

Das italienische Filmschaffen gehörte einst zur europäischen Avantgarde. Pier Paolo Pasolini war einer der bekanntesten und sicher der umstrittenste Regisseur jener Zeit. Und Franco Citti war das Gesicht einiger seiner schönsten Filme.
Dabei war Citti eigentlich gar nicht Schauspieler, sondern Maurer. Gestern ist Citti 80jährig in Rom gestorben. Ein Nachruf.

Franco had a natural acting talent, especially when playing a role suited to his temperament. George Cukor said once when shown a screen test of the young Gary Cooper, "He can't act but the camera will fall in love with his face." Unlike Cooper, who learned to act, and became a member of the Hollywood community, Franco remained an outsider to the film industry and did not need to learn to act. "I realised that if I tried to speak Italian well, or studied at a drama school, I'd be a fake," he said.

L'acteur italien Franco Citti est mort à son domicile à Rome, hier 14 janvier, à l'âge de 80 ans. Il a été, avec son ami Ninetto Davoli, l'un des acteurs de prédilection de Pier Paolo Pasolini. Le grand public se souviendra aussi de Calo, l'homme de main fidèle d'Al Pacino dans le premier et le troisième Parrain de Francis Ford Coppola.
