14.09.2022 Die am 3. September 1926 in Chiliomodi bei Korinth als Ειρήνη Λελέκου (Iríni Lelékou) geborene griechische Film- und Theaterschauspielerin und Sängerin Irene Papas (Bild) ist am 14. September 2022 ebenda gestorben. Die albanischstämmige Künstlerin gehörte zu den führenden Tragödiendarstellerinnen ihres Landes und wirkte in ihrer sechzigjährigen Karriere in über 80 Filmen mit. Für Hollywood wurde sie von Elia Kazan entdeckt. Sie spielte an der Seite von u.a. David Niven, Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, Sophia Loren, Catherine Deneuve, John Malkovich oder James Cagney. Auch hierzulande wurde Papas besonders berühmt als Witwe Surmelina im Film "Zorba the Greek" unter der Regie von Michael Cacoyannis und mit Anthony Quinn in der Titelrolle. Als Sängerin arbeitete Irene Papas u.a. mit Vangelis und Mikis Theodorakis zusammen.

Irene Papas, a Greek actress who became famous worldwide thanks to her roles in such films as Zorba the Greek, Z and The Guns of Navarone, died Wednesday at age 96. With her haunting looks and acclaimed gift for dramatic roles, Papas was also known for her stage work, particularly in ancient Greek tragedies.

The Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports announced her death. In a statement posted to social media, the ministry wrote of Papas: "Majestic, stately, dynamic, she was the personification of Greek beauty on the cinema screen and on the theater stage, an international star who radiated Greekness."

Papas starb im Alter von 93 Jahren, wie das griechische Kulturministerium bestätigte. Sie spielte über sechs Jahrzehnte hinweg prominente Rollen in Hollywood-Filmen sowie im französischen und italienischen Kino. International bekannt wurde Papas durch ihre Rolle in "Alexis Sorbas", in dem sie 1964 an der Seite der Hollywood-Stars Gregory Peck und Anthony Quinn zu sehen war.

Kultureller Boykott

Papas nahm zwei Alben mit griechischen Volksliedern und Hymnen auf, "Odes" (1979) und "Rapsodies" (1986), und sorgte mit ihrem Gesang auf "666", dem 1971 erschienenen Album der Rockgruppe Aphrodite's Child, für einen veritablen Skandal. Zudem äußerte sie sich kritisch über die politische Situation in ihrem Land. 1967 riskierte sie ihre Staatsbürgerschaft, als sie nach der Machtübernahme durch die Militärjunta zu einem "kulturellen Boykott" Griechenlands aufrief, indem sie sagte: "Der Nazismus ist zurück in Griechenland" und die neuen Führer des Landes als "nicht mehr als eine Bande von Erpressern" bezeichnete.
