Michael Cimino, Oscar-winning director of "Deer Hunter" and "Heaven's Gate," has died at the age of 77.
Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Fremaux revealed the news on Twitter Saturday (...).
Michael Cimino, who won Oscars as director and a producer of "The Deer Hunter" before "Heaven's Gate" destroyed his career and sped up the demise of 60-year-old United Artists, has died. He was 77. Friends called the police when they couldn't reach him and he was found dead Saturday.
Deer Hunter actor Robert De Niro sent The Hollywood Reporter a statement mourning the director: "Our work together is something I will always remember. He will be missed."
Despite his achievement with The Deer Hunter, his next project, Heaven's Gate (1980), capsized United Artists with his profligate budget excesses. Subsequently, the words "Heaven's Gate" entered filmmaking lexicon as an out-of-control, overbudget production.
The Deer Hunter with its famous Russian roulette scene starred Robert de Niro and Christopher Walken and won five Oscars including the award for the best film in 1979.
It chronicles the lives of a group of friends from a Pennsylvania town and the devastating effect of the Vietnam War, both on those who fought in it and those who stayed at home in small-town America.
Beim letztjährigen Festival del Film Locarno wurde Cimino mit dem Ehrenleoparden ausgezeichnet.
One cannot be born with freedom, that's for sure. Freedom is something you have to conquer, and earn, day by day. It is a strenuous battle to fight during every moment, the only way I have to conceive freedom. I think that the sense of life is in motion: to stay alive you have to move, over and over again. Only when death comes, movement is denied.
