07.08.2023 Der am 29. August 1935 in Chigago geborene US-amerikanische Regisseur, Drehbuchautor und Produzent William Friedkin (Bild) ist am 7. August 2023 in Los Angeles gestorben. Seine grössten Erfolge verzeichnete er in den frühen 1970er-Jahren in der Zeit des "New Hollywood"-Kinos mit dem Film "The French Connection" ("Brennpunkt Brooklyn"), für den er fünf Oscars gewann (u.a. für den besten Film und die beste Regie) sowie mit "The Exorcist", der noch im Jahr 2001 auf Platz 3 in einer Umfrage des American Film Institute nach den 100 besten Thrillern landete. Along with Peter Bogdanovich, Francis Ford Coppola and Hal Ashby, Friedkin rose to A-list status in the 1970s, part of a new generation of vibrant, risk-taking filmmakers. Combining his experience in television, particularly in documentary film, with a cutting-edge style of editing, Friedkin brought a great deal of energy to the horror and police thriller genres in which he specialized.

Die Nachricht von Friedkins Tod sorgte am Montag für bestürzte Reaktionen. Der Oscar-gekrönte Regisseur Guillermo del Toro würdigte Friedkin als "einen der Götter des Kinos". "Das Kino hat einen wahren Gelehrten verloren, und ich habe einen lieben, treuen und wahren Freund verloren."
Horrorbuch-Autor Stephen King erklärte, Friedkin sei ein "äußerst talentierter Filmemacher" gewesen. King würdigte dabei auch den an den Kinokassen gescheiterten Film "Atemlos vor Angst" ("Sorcerer"): "'Der Exorzist' ist großartig, aber für mich war 'Atemlos vor Angst' der echte Klassiker."
