11.12.2020 Der am 20. Dezember 1960 in Bonghwa (Südkorea) geborene südkoreanische Filmregisseur und Drehbuchautor Kim Ki-duk (Bild) ist am 11. Dezember 2020 in Riga (Lettland) in Folge einer SARS-CoV-2-Infektion gestorben. Für seinen Spielfilm "Pieta" (2012) hatte er als erster koreanischer Filmemacher den Goldenen Löwen der Filmfestspiele von Venedig erhalten.

Movie director Kim Ki-duk dies of Coronavirus
Debuting in 1996 with the work "Crocodile," Kim is the only South Korean director to win at all three major European film festivals: Cannes, Venice and Berlin. But the award-winning director has shunned public appearances in Korea since he was accused of sexually assaulting actresses while filming in 2017.

Kim's films divided critics but he was celebrated on the international festival circuit. Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter ... and Spring (2003), about a boy raised by a Buddhist monk in an isolated floating temple, and, with its gentle poetic (and non-violent) style a sharp contrast with Kim's previous work, was an international art-house hit. Pieta (2012), a story of redemption featuring a loan shark mobster (and more of Kim's trademark visceral violence), won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
Kim's directing career was derailed in 2018 when three women came forward accusing him and his Bad Guy star Cho Jae-hyun of rape and sexual assault.

Controversial South Korean film-maker Kim Ki-duk has died aged 59 in a Latvian hospital, where he was being treated for Covid-19. The news was initially reported by Vitaly Mansky, director of Latvia's Artdocfest film festival, though and later confirmed by Kim's family in the Korean media. Kim was understood to be developing a film project set in the Baltic region when he became ill.
