30.12.2023 Der am 5. Februar 1948 in Leeds geborene britische Schauspieler Tom Wilkinson (Bild) ist am 30. Dezember 2023 gestorben. Er wurde berühmt durch seine Mitwirkung in Filmen wie "The Full Monty", "Shakespeare in Love", "The Patriot", "In the Bedroom", "Michael Clayton", "Batman Begins", "The Ghost Writer", "Selma" und "The Grand Budapest Hotel". Er spielte an der Seite u.a. von Gwyneth Paltrow, Judi Dench, Joseph Fiennes, Mel Gibson, George Clooney und Sissy Spacek. Wilkinson war auch am Theater tätig, so unter anderem in Produktionen der Royal Shakespeare Company. Für seine Rolle als Benjamin Franklin in der Fernseh-Miniserie "John Adams" wurde er 2008 mit einem Emmy und 2009 mit einem Golden Globe ausgezeichnet.

Tom Wilkinson: The Full Monty actor dies at 75
With more than 130 film and TV credits in total, Wilkinson was as comfortable in period dramas like 1995's Sense and Sensibility and 2013's Belle, as he was playing criminal masterminds in movies like Rush Hour opposite Jackie Chan in 1998, or Guy Ritchie's RocknRolla in 2008.
He also earned an Emmy for playing US political figure Benjamin Franklin in 2008 mini-series John Adams and an Emmy nomination as John F Kennedy's father Joe in The Kennedys. He played President Lyndon B Johnson in 2014's Selma, and appeared in The Grand Budapest Hotel and Girl with a Pearl Earring.

He received six Bafta nominations in total as well as two Oscar nominations for Michael Clayton, a 2007 legal thriller starring George Clooney, and In the Bedroom, a 2001 domestic drama in which he played a bereaved father.
Clooney told the Guardian: "Tom made every project better. Made every actor better. He was the epitome of elegance and he will be dearly missed by all of us."
Added Sissy Spacek, who starred alongside him in In the Bedroom: "He was a brilliant actor and a very lovely man. We had a wonderful time working together."

Born in Yorkshire in 1948, Wilkinson became fascinated with acting and directing with the drama society at the University of Kent, where he studied literature. Pursuing his acting career, Wilkinson graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (Rada) in London in 1973.
