09.01.2022 Der am 11. Dezember 1944 in New York City geborene US-amerikanische Musikproduzent Michael Lang (Bild) ist am 8. Januar 2022 ebenda gestorben. Lang organisierte in den 1960er-Jahren einige grosse Musik-Festivals wie beispielsweise das Miami Pop Festival 1968 mit Künstlern wie Jimi Hendrix oder Blue Cheer. Um den damaligen sozialen Bewegungen ein Sprachrohr zu geben, aber auch um sein Aufnahmestudio Media Sounds zu finanzieren, organisierte er im August 1969 zusammen mit Artie Kornfeld das legendäre Woodstock-Festival.* Nach dem Woodstock-Festival gründete Michael Lang die Plattenfirma Just Sunshine Records. Zwischen 1971 und dem Ende des Labels 1974 veröffentlichte Michael Lang über 40 Musikalben von Künstlern wie Billy Joel oder Bob Dylan. Des Weiteren fungierte Lang als Manager u.a. von Joe Cocker und Rickie Lee Jones.

Lang was only 24 when he helped conceive the festival, which would go on to become a massively influential counterculture touchstone, thanks in part to a documentary on the event released the following year. Over the years, Lang’s name became synonymous with the Woodstock brand, as the promoter helped helm subsequent iterations of the festival in 1994 and 1999. (…) A 50th anniversary concert in 2019 was mired in controversy and legal issues and was canceled before it could go on.

“I booked the three hottest bands at the time — Jefferson Airplane, Canned Heat and Credence Clearwater Revival,” Lang told Billboard in 2019. “That gave us immediate credibility and the word got out and then suddenly the stone was rolling downhill. Then we started adding bands left and right. I remember when David Geffen walked into our office with a test pressing of Crosby, Stills and Nash. He put it on the turntable and made a deal right there on the spot. Same thing with Joe Cocker. We heard his voice and booked him pretty quickly.”

Woodstock Festival Co-Creator Michael Lang Dies at 77
“Woodstock offered an environment for people to express their better selves if you will,” said Lang in a 2019 interview. “It was probably the most peaceful event of its kind in history. That was because of expectations and what people wanted to create there.”
A 50th anniversary Woodstock was in the works and planned for August 2019 in Upstate New York with featured artists Jay-Z, The Killers, Miley Cyrus, and more before financial backers pulled out, leading to the eventual cancellation of the event.
