08.03.2024 Der am 5. April 1955 in Nagoya in der Präfektur Aichi geborene japanische Mangaka, Charakterdesigner und Drehbuchautor Akira Toriyama (jap. 鳥山明, Toriyama Akira) ist am 1. März 2024 gestorben. Weltweit bekannt wurde er vor allem als Autor der Manga-Reihe "Dragon Ball". (*)

We are deeply saddened to inform you that Manga creator Akira Toriyama passes away on March 1st due to acute subdural hematoma. He was in age of 68.

It’s our deep regret that he still had several works in the middle of creation with great enthusiasm. Also, he would have many more things to achieve.

However, he has left many manga titles and works of art to this world. Thanks to the support of so many people around the world, he has been able to continue his creative activities for over 45 years. We hope that Akira Toriyama’s unique world of creation continues to be loved by everyone for a long time to come.

Dragon Ball Creator Akira Toriyama Dies at 68

Toriyama began his first serialized manga, Dr. Slump, in 1980, and it inspired two television anime and multiple films. Toriyama followed it up with Dragon Ball, which ran from 1984 to 1995, and is still inspiring manga and anime sequels and spinoffs today. The manga's Dragon Ball anime adaptation, its sequel Dragon Ball Z, and its other numerous sequels and anime films are equally as well-known as the manga, and its hero Goku has become a character known throughout the world.

Toriyama is also well-known as the character designer for the Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon games.

Toriyama received numerous accolades throughout his illustrious career, including the Shogakukan Manga Award and a decoration for a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government in 2019.

He was due to be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Awards at the 2024 Tokyo Anime Awards Festival, which kicked off on Friday.

"Es gibt wohl keinen kommerziell erfolgreichen Shōnen Manga, also Manga für Buben, der nicht irgendwie von Dragon Ball inspiriert ist", ordnet Kulturwissenschaftler Christian Gasser die Bedeutung der Serie ein.

In der Fantasy-Geschichte geht es, wie der Name schon sagt, um sieben Kugeln, die "Dragon Balls". Wer diese Kugeln besitzt, dem erscheint ein Drache, der ihm jeden Wunsch erfüllt. Insgesamt umfasst das epische Abenteuer rund um Hauptfigur Son-Goku stolze 8'000 Seiten. Es gibt viele Hindernisse, viele Kämpfe – und viel Humor.

Warum ausgerechnet Toriyamas "Dragon Ball" als einer der ersten Mangas den Durchbruch in Europa schaffte, lässt sich laut Christian Gasser am einfachsten mit der Optik erklären: "‹Dragon Ball› war neu, frisch, gut gelaunt, hektisch, ein bisschen hysterisch, ein bisschen überdreht, gleichzeitig süss und niedlich." Zudem passte die Serie perfekt in eine Zeit, die von Games, Musikvideos und Techno geprägt war.
