Der US-Amerikaner gilt als einer der einflussreichsten Künstler des 20. Jahrhunderts. Seine abstrakten Bilder mit klaren Linien und kräftigen Farben machten ihn berühmt.

Ein Leben lang schuf Ellsworth Kelly Bilder und Skulpturen von grosser Einfachheit - klare geometrische Flächen meist, die hart aufeinanderstossen.

Wenige Wochen vor seinem Tod besuchte eine Reporterin des britischen "Guardian" den Künstler Ellsworth Kelly in seinem Studio in Spencertown im Staate New York. Er steckte noch voller Pläne, insbesondere der Entwurf einer konfessionslosen Kapelle beschäftigte ihn, in deren Design sich die bunten Farben und geometrischen Formen, die sein Werk prägten, wiederfanden.
(...) Und obwohl dieses Werk schon vor so langer Zeit entwickelt wurde, wirkt es ja immer noch und immer wieder ganz aktuell und heutig. Ellsworth Kelly, die Jahrhundertfigur, die Picasso noch kannte, aber mit de Kooning nichts trinken wollte, war im Kunstbetrieb der Gegenwart absolut präsent. Ständig sah man neue Sachen, hörte von neuen Vorhaben, las über ihn.

Mr. Kelly was a true original, forging his art equally from the observational exactitude he gained as a youthful bird-watching enthusiast; from skills he developed as a designer of camouflage patterns while in the Army; and from exercises in automatic drawing he picked up from European surrealism.

Boosted by strong gallery representation under the guidance of Leo Castelli and Blum Helman, Kelly enjoyed mainstream success and recognition in the 1970s, culminating in his first retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, in 1973, and followed by his first major European retrospective at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, in 1979.

In the early 1950s, his style anticipated the unbroken colours and clear lines of hard edge painting by some years. Although he was associated with a number of movements, including minimalism in the 1960s, Kelly remained resolutely independent, combining his austere sense of form with a unique, sunstruck palette.
