Brice Marden, Who Rejuvenated Painting in the 1960s, Dies at 84

When conceptual art, Pop Art and minimalist sculpture were in the ascendancy and many were saying that painting was dead, Mr. Marden issued a powerful counterstatement.

Brice Marden, who re-energized the art of painting in the 1960s with his subdued, yet seductive, monochrome canvases, and who drew on minimalism, abstract expressionism, scholar’s rocks, Chinese calligraphy and Tang dynasty poetry in a six-decade career marked by restless experimentation, died Aug. 10 at his home in Tivoli, N.Y.

Brice Marden, who drew from Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism in pathbreaking explorations of gesture, line, and color that put him in a category of one, died August 9 at his home in Tivoli, New York. (…) Marden rose to fame in the early 1970s with his densely hued multipanel works, which he created just as painting had gone out of fashion, thus reviving the medium for a new generation.

“Brice Marden was one of our greatest American artists, whose achievement in continuing and extending the tradition of painting has long been recognized and celebrated the world over. He was a painter of rare insight into the pleasure and poetry of his medium; always dedicated to gesture, chance, substance—the elemental matters of art,” Larry Gagosian said in an email to Artnet News. “It has been an honor to share his masterful work with an international audience. This loss is profound, and he will be missed.”

Marden rose to prominence in the 1960s and 70s, synthesizing elements of Abstract Expressionism, Pop art, Minimalism and more into his own unique idiom

Marden’s explorations into abstraction were committed. Once asked if he had ever wanted to paint figuratively, he responded simply: “No.” Yet the artists he loved often came from figuration.

As painters were attempting to break free of the frame, and in some cases the canvas itself, Marden applied himself to the medium’s reinvention. “People were saying ‘painting is dead’”, he once explained. “It was my way of saying what can be done.” He called rectangles “a great human invention.”
