18.07.2022 Der am 28. Januar 1929 in Stockholm geborene Künstler Claes Thure Oldenburg (Bild) ist am 18. Juli 2022 in New York City gestorben. Er gehörte neben Andy Warhol und Roy Lichtenstein zu den bedeutendsten Vertretern der amerikanischen Pop Art. Besonders bekannt wurde er durch Skulpturen, die aus einfachen Werkstoffen hergestellt sind oder Alltagsgegenstände darstellen. Oldenburg arbeitete seit 1976 mit der niederländischen Künstlerin Coosje van Bruggen (1942–2009) zusammen; sie waren seit 1977 verheiratet. (*)

Oldenburg was honored with solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum in New York, London's Tate Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, among others, while his and his wife's joint work was celebrated in shows at New York's Whitney Museum of American Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Arguably, however, Oldenburg's most enduring and literally most accessible works are the ones he (alone or with van Bruggen) created for public spaces, from a giant rubber stamp bearing the word "FREE" in Cleveland to Los Angeles' "Binoculars Building" to Philadelphia's giant clothespin.

Oldenburg blieb in seinen Arbeiten nicht auf cooler Distanz wie Warhol oder Lichtenstein und brachte in gewisser Weise Gedankengänge von Surrealisten wie René Magritte und Salvador Dalí zu Ende: Er blies eigentlich kleine, alltägliche Dinge in Übergröße auf, setzte sie in eine Landschaft und damit in eine Umgebung, der sie völlig fremd waren. Die bekannteste dieser Arbeiten ist die mit Van Bruggen entwickelte "Spoonbridge and Cherry", ein Löffel für Giganten samt Kirsche, der heute zu den Symbolen der Stadt Minneapolis zählt.

Er setzte neue Maßstäbe, prägte Generationen nach ihm und behielt immer seinen Humor

Mit seinen bahnbrechenden und poppigen Werken definierte Oldenburg die Beziehung zwischen Malerei und Skulptur neu und erhob das Objekt zum Kunstwerk. Er sei immer schon mehr an den Dingen als an den Menschen interessiert gewesen, sagte Oldenburg einmal. Schon als Kind seien Kunstmuseen deswegen für ihn "ein Mysterium" gewesen, er sei lieber in naturwissenschaftliche Museen gegangen. Das änderte sich wohl, als er später selbst in den bedeutendsten Kunsteinrichtungen ausstellte. Seine Werke befinden sich heute in renommierten internationalen Sammlungen.
