19.12.2021 Der am 23. Juli 1933 in Florenz geborene italo-britische Architekt Richard Rogers (Bild) ist am 18. Dezember 2021 in London gestorben. Von ihm stammen u. a. die Entwürfe für das Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, den Millennium Dome in London, den Europäischen Gerichtshof für Menschenrechte in Strassburg und des Gebäudes der National Assembly for Wales. Ein weiteres grosses Projekt, welches 2018 abgeschlossen wurde, war ein neues Gebäude am Ground Zero in New York City. Richard Rogers ist der Architekt des 357 Meter hohen Three World Trade Centers (Turm 3 des neuen World Trade Center Komplexes)*. Im Jahr 1985 erhielt Rogers die RIBA Gold Medaille, 2006 den RIBA Stirling Prize for Architecture, 2007 den Pritzker-Preis und 2019 die Goldmedaille des American Institute of Architects. 1991 wurde Rogers als Knight Bachelor in den britischen Adelsstand erhoben. 1996 erhielt er als Baron Rogers of Riverside, of Chelsea in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, die Würde eines Life Peer und damit einen Sitz im House of Lords.

Lord Rogers, who has died aged 88, was one of the first Britons to become a global architectural superstar - the other was his erstwhile partner, Norman Foster. He won commissions ranging from airport terminals to law courts and office buildings to housing, in countries as far afield as Taiwan, Colombia and the United States. It was a remarkable achievement for a man who couldn't really draw, and who couldn't read until the age of 11.

Rogers begriff sich als moderner Funktionalist. In England herrschte damals extreme Wohnungsnot, die nur mit billigen, vorgefertigten Häusern gelindert werden konnte. Doch Rogers entwickelte seinen farbenfrohen, wiedererkennbaren, aber auch anpassungsfähigen Stil, bei dem er sowohl die Gebäudestruktur als auch die Infrastruktur als Designelemente einsetzte.
