ZUM TOD DER IRAKISCH-BRITISCHEN ARCHITEKTIN ZAHA HADID

31.03.2016 Die am 31. Oktober 1950 in Bagdad (Irak) geborene irakisch-britische Architektin, Architekturprofessorin und Designerin Zaha Hadid (Bild) ist am 31. März 2016 in Miami (Florida, USA) gestorben. Als erste Frau erhielt sie 2004 die bedeutendste Ehrung in der Architektur, den Pritzker-Architektur-Preis.

Zaha Hadid zählte zu den weltweit erfolgreichsten Architekten. Unter anderem entwarf sie das Olympische Schwimmstadion in London, das Nationalmuseum für moderne Kunst in Rom, das Rosenthal Center für Gegenwartskunst in Cincinnati (USA), das BMW-Werk in Leipzig, die Seilbahn-Bergstation in Innsbruck oder das verblüffend geschwungene Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku in Aserbaidschan.

Die 1950 in Bagdad geborene Architektin gewann mit ihren kühnen Entwürfen zahlreiche Wettbewerbe. Allerdings wurden die Bauten nur selten realisiert und galten gar lange Zeit als unrealisierbar.

Hadid erwarb sich mit modernistischen, futuristischen Entwürfen wie dem Wassersportzentrum der Olympischen Spiele in London 2012, der BMW-Fabrik in Leipzig und den Seilbahnstationen in Innsbruck internationale Anerkennung und Ruhm. 2004 gewann sie als erste Frau den Pritzker-Preis, der als "Nobelpreis für Architektur" gilt. 2009 erhielt sie das japanische Praemium Imperiale.

"Queen of the curve" Zaha Hadid dies aged 65 from heart attack

Hadid, born in Baghdad in 1950, became a revolutionary force in British architecture even though she struggled to win commissions in the UK for many years. The Iraqi government described her death as "an irreplaceable loss to Iraq and the global community".

She studied mathematics at the American University of Beirut before launching her architectural career in London at the Architectural Association.

Groundbreaking Architect

Ms. Hadid was a path breaker. Along with being the first woman to win the Pritzker, she was the first to be awarded the RIBA Gold Medal, Britain's top architecture prize, which came in 2015.

She was also a role model and inspiration for generations of young architects, men and women, who wanted to become Ms. Hadid: an architect of boundless ambition, a celebrity, and an artist with big ideas who won commissions for some of the world's big, flashiest projects by the sheer force of her intelligence, creativity and personality.

In a statement to Al Jazeera, the Chicago-based Pritzker Architecture Prize organisation said it was "deeply saddened" by Hadid's sudden death.

"She was truly a pioneer in the field of architecture. She represents the highest aspirations of the Pritzker Architecture Prize. Zaha Hadid will be remembered for her talent, creativity, commitment, loyalty and friendship."

Hadid aura appartenu à un moment particulier de l'architecture qui permet à la construction d'échapper, au moins en apparence, à la tyrannie de la pesanteur et aux impératifs de l'angle droit. L'informatique, autant que les nouveaux matériaux, ont rendu possibles des projets et des formes qui seraient naguère passés pour des insultes à la raison. Les formes que l'architecte anglo-irakienne imaginait ont ainsi pu passer du rêve à la réalité grâce aux travaux d'ingénieurs tels que Cédric Price (1934-2003), rencontré au début de sa carrière, ou à ceux de l'agence Arup.
