In Loving Memory of Phyllida Barlow

A remarkably original, powerful and generous artist, Phyllida Barlow singularly redefined a language of sculpture and consistently shattered conventions, challenging old notions of monumentality and of beauty.

Over the course of almost 60 years, she embraced humble materials to create sculpture and installations that defied the rules of gravity, balance and symmetry. Her work interrupts and invades the space around it, a strategy through which Barlow playfully guided audiences to become daring explorers.

The sculptor gained international fame in later life, after retiring from a four decade teaching career.

After leaving her position leading the undergraduate course at the Slade School of Art in 2009, she was given a solo show at the Serpentine Gallery in 2010, which proved a springboard to wider critical and curatorial acclaim.

She said of her typically – but not exclusively – large scale sculptures, created through an ad-hoc process of bundling everyday utilitarian materials, “Initially the audience is myself”. She went on to explain to ArtReview in 2010, “How I’m physically negotiating the space is often more important than the object itself. They are obstacles to be navigated, protagonists that I feel I’m encountering.”

"One of the art world’s most celebrated late starters"

The artist was best known for her large-scale sculptures and installations, often made from modest materials including cardboard, plywood or polystyrene. She represented Britain in the Venice Biennale in 2017.

Almost as remarkable as her artworks was her biography. Barlow rose to international prominence as a sculptor only after retiring in 2009 after four decades teaching art. Her career included 20 years as a professor at the Slade School of Fine Art, where her students included Rachel Whiteread, Tacita Dean and Monster Chetwynd.

Though she had been making her own art throughout her teaching career, Barlow’s first major show at a public gallery was not until the following year at the Serpentine. Presentations at the New Museum in New York and the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas followed, and she was commissioned to create the site-specific exhibition “dock” for the Duveen Galleries of Tate Britain in 2014. Barlow became a Royal Academician in 2011 and was made a dame in 2021.

The artist's gallery, Hauser & Wirth, described her as a "guiding light and inspiration to so many"

Frances Morris, Director Tate Modern, said: "Barlow's practice implicitly acknowledges that in a world saturated with objects, the role of sculpture and the job of the sculptor might be less about making things than generating a particular type of experience of the work, and of the world in which it temporarily resides.“

Artists and Curators Remember the ‘Brave’ Sculptor Phyllida Barlow, Whose Assemblages Challenged Space, Perspective, and Gravity

Artist who taught Rachel Whiteread and Tacita Dean during a decades-long career at London's Slade School of Art, won critical recognition in her mid-sixties for her massive, site-specific installations

Her enhanced international profile, boosted by a string of high-profile exhibitions, coincided with her retirement from teaching in 2009. In 2011, she was made a Royal Academician, the year she joined Hauser & Wirth gallery. In 2012, Barlow had solo shows at the New Museum in New York and the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds, UK. In 2013, she was included in the Carnegie International at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh.
