Wayne Thiebaud, Playful Painter of the Everyday, Dies at 101

Mr. Thiebaud’s rich and luminous depictions of midcentury Americana separated him from the classic Pop Art of the time.

Thiebaud had begun painting the works he is best known for in the early 1960s. These works depicted quintessentially American, everyday still lives in bright colours which included cakes, pies, hot dogs and hamburgers, gumballs, lollipops, and slot machines. Instead of painting from life, Thiebaud represented these objects from memory, drawing from nostalgic recollections of bakeries and diners from his youth and contemporary commercial imagery. Working with thickly applied paint, Thiebaud often spotlights his objects against pale backgrounds with the well-defined shadows characteristic of advertisements.

Thiebaud worked as a graphic designer and cartoonist before he set out to pursue a career as a painter in the mid-1950s. He rose to prominence as Pop art entered the mainstream, but his approach to the iconography of American life was distinct from that of peers such as Andy Warhol and James Rosenquist: less critique and satire, more nostalgia, joy, and longing.

Thiebaud wurde unter anderem durch seine Stillleben von Tortenstücken, Lutschern, Eistüten und Lippenstiften bekannt. "Von Kaugummiautomaten bis zu Landschaften von San Francisco, er hat das alltägliche Leben in eine ikonische Aussage von Farbe und Form verwandelt", würdigte der kalifornische Gouverneur Gavin Newsom das Werk des Künstlers.
