20.08.2021 Der am 5. Juli 1940 in Monroe (Washington) geborene US-amerikanische Maler und weltbekannte Fotorealist Chuck Close (Bild) ist am 19. August 2021 in Oceanside (New York) gestorben. Close ging beim Malen nicht von der Wirklichkeit der Natur und ihrem direkten Reiz auf die Netzhaut aus, vielmehr orientierte er sich an der indirekten Wirklichkeit des Fotos. Mit Hilfe eines Rasters zerlegte er jedes Foto und übertrug es auf diese Weise auf die Leinwand.*

Chuck Close, Photorealist with an Acute Eye for Detail, Is Dead at 81

Chuck Close, a Photorealist painter who earned acclaim for his incisive portraits and more recently faced criticism after multiple women accused him of sexual harassment, has died at 81. Pace Gallery, which represents him, said on Thursday that he had died after a congestive heart failure resulting from a long illness.

Chuck Close's face made him famous — his face on canvas, that is. Gigantic, up close and personal, his black and white 1968 Big Self-Portrait leaves nothing to the imagination. You can see every spike of stubble, every wisp of uncombed hair, every curl of smoke from his cigarette. Close gehörte zu den bekanntesten, erfolgreichsten und einflussreichsten zeitgenössischen Künstlern der USA. Die "New York Times" feierte ihn einmal als "Meister des modernen Porträts". Bekannt war er insbesondere für seine psychedelisch anmutenden Porträts, für die er Fotos in einem gitterförmigen Raster auf die Leinwand übertrug. Aus der Entfernung sind die Gesichter klar zu erkennen, verschwimmen aus der Nähe aber zu einem Muster aus Pixeln.
