DER US-AMERIKANISCHE KÜNSTLER DAN GRAHAM IST GESTORBEN

20.02.2022 Der am 31. März 1942 in Urbana (Illinois) geborene US-amerikanische Architekt, Bildhauer, Performance-, Konzept- und Videokünstler, Fotograf, Autor und Kurator Dan Graham (Bild) ist am 19. Februar 2022 in New York gestorben. Dan Graham war für die jüngere Künstlergeneration einer der einflussreichsten Konzeptkünstler, der mit seinem Werk früh die Autonomie des künstlerischen Werks in Frage gestellt und die Rolle der Populärkultur reflektiert hat. 2010 wurde Graham in die American Academy of Arts and Sciences gewählt.*

Dan Graham, Conceptual Artist Who Bent Time and Space, Dies at 79

Dan Graham, an unclassifiable artist whose sculptures, performances, and conceptual pieces played on viewers’ perception of themselves, the people around them, and their environments, has died at 79. His four galleries—Lisson Gallery, Marian Goodman Gallery, 303 Gallery, and Regen Projects—said in a statement that he passed away this weekend in New York. (…) “His influence over the past half century as a writer, photographer, architect, sculptor, filmmaker and performance artist is widely felt in the contemporary art world,” the statement said.

Dan Graham Groundbreaking Conceptual Artist Dies Age 79

Despite his recent disavowal of Conceptual Art as a term, he was one of its earliest pioneers through early text-based works, typographic wall pieces and schematic poems, not to mention the seminal illustrated magazine essay, Homes for America (1966). He exhibited the result of his peers Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt, and Robert Smithson at the John Daniels Gallery in New York. He was briefly the curator and director before showing alongside these and many other Minimalists and Conceptualists during the 1960s and 70s.

Artist, writer and curator Dan Graham, a vital force and vision in the development of conceptual art who used the language and grammar of architecture as a way to explore culture, space and perception, has passed away at the age of 79. The artist, whose body of work consistently defied easy classifications, often used architectural pavilions, glass and mirrors to shape and define the experience of space, allowing viewers to move through and into his pieces to experience peculiar constructions and arrangements of spatial relations.

The main focus of Graham’s art since the late 1970s was an ongoing series of public architectural installations, which he called pavilions, derived from geometric forms and rendered in plate glass, two-way mirror, and steel armatures. Graham intended his pavilions to function as punctuation marks, pausing or altering the experience of physical space, providing momentary diversion for romance or play, or else as places to delve into other activities, like reading or viewing videos. These deceptively simple structures recall many of the artist’s earlier experiments with perception, reflection, and refraction, but depart from them in their non-gallery setting as long-term additions to the landscape.

Mattscheiben in Vorgärten
