07.04.2022 Der am 2. Januar 1935 in Tavistock (Devon) geborene britische Kinderbuchautor und Illustrator David McKee (Bild) ist am 7. April 2022 in Südfrankreich gestorben. Seine zahlreichen Bilderbücher für Kinder und seine Buchserien sind international erfolgreich und wurden in mehr als 60 Ländern veröffentlicht. Für die BBC entwickelte er zahlreiche Filmprojekte. "Die berühmteste und erfolgreichste von David McKee geschaffene Figur ist Elmar, der bunt karierte Elefant. Das Bilderbuch erschien erstmals 1968 in England. 'Elmar der Elefant' erlebt in seinen Abenteuern immer wieder, wie es ist, anders zu sein – nämlich kunterbunt."*

David McKee, 1935 – 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of David McKee, beloved author and illustrator for children, and creator of iconic children’s books Elmer, Not Now, Bernard and Mr Benn. David died surrounded by his family, following a short illness in the South of France, where he has spent a lot of time in recent years; he was 87. All at Andersen Press hope his spirit lives on for many more generations through his joyful, heartfelt stories.

The Devon-born writer, who also created Elmer the Patchwork Elephant and Not Now, Bernard, sold more than 10 million books around the world.

Children's charity Kidscape commented: "His books highlighted diversity & inclusivity & he will be missed."

Children's book reviewer Imogen Russell Williams said McKee's "work, full of bold flat colour and subversive wit, is simply unforgettable", and had "enriched small readers for decades".

His long time publisher Klaus Flugge said he was devastated by the news. “His was a singular voice and a shining light in children’s books that highlighted inclusivity, diversity and parts of our world that are not always present in publishing for children.”

Mit der Geschichte um den buntkarierten Elefanten Elmar hatte der britische Kinderbuchkünstler David McKee einen Klassiker erdacht, der schon Kitakindern vom Anderssein, Ausgrenzung und Respekt erzählt. McKee dachte sich den Elefanten nach einem rassistischen Vorfall aus, den er mit seiner Familie in Plympton in der Grafschaft Devon erlebte.

Sein Anderssein macht ihn nicht zum Außenseiter, sondern im Gegenteil zum Mittelpunkt der Urwaldgesellschaft. Sein buntes Äußeres sowie seine Mentalität, sein soziales Verhalten, seine Hilfsbereitschaft, Toleranz und sein sonniges Gemüt machen ihn zum Liebling von Kindern, Eltern und PädagogInnen.
